Plastic in the ocean - what does that have to do with me?

Plastic in the ocean - what does that have to do with me?

When you think of plastic in the ocean and how to prevent it you probably think that the only thing you can do is avoid littering on the beach. Well, even though it is definitely an essential step in protecting our environment, there is a lot more you can do to help save marine life!
Did you know that 8 million pieces of plastic find its way into our oceans daily? Britain alone contributes an estimated 1.7 million tonnes of plastic annually (SAS, 2020). At the rate we’re still using plastic, the problem is set to increase tenfold.
The impact this has on the ecosystem, marine life and humans is potentially irreversible. Given that we rely on the ocean to regulate our climate, absorb CO2 and to provide a source of protein to over a billion people we have to start taking bigger steps to protect it now!

Good news is you can start protecting the ocean from the comfort of your own home. All you have to do is go to the bathroom and look around. A particularly bad and apparently invisible source of plastic pollution in our bathrooms is microplastics. Peels, shower gels and many other care and cosmetic products still contain tiny plastic particles that cannot be filtered out of the wastewater and thus get into our seas - and through them into the oceans – unhindered.

Once you identify all the products you have that contain plastic and might be damaging to the environment, think of the ways you can change your shopping habits in the future to avoid future polution. Maybe look into cosmetic companies that ensure that their plastic is bio-degradable or completely plastic-free. An easy way to find out more about this is to google some influencers who have been living the eco-lifestyle for a while now and can share some tips and tricks on how to make your bathroom more “environmentally friendly”.
