You might wonder why is plastic so problematic for the oceans? Everyone has probably heard of the plastic in the marine life problem. But many of us have no idea how bad the problem really is. The fact it, there are unimaginable amounts of plastic in the world’s oceans.
A study at the end of 2014 found that there are at least 5.25 trillion plastic particles in the oceans. That is around 700 plastic parts per fish that live in the sea. Plastic in seas and oceans is a serious problem and it destroys our oceans and is an acute danger for all sea creatures. In addition, plastic itself contains pollutants and literally attracts other toxins. This way, toxic plastic particles are deposited and become all the more dangerous for living things that come into contact with them. And if you think that it does not affect you directly, you are wrong since we end up eating the tiny plastic particles in fish or seafood.
“The best solution to keeping plastic from ending up in the ocean is to not make so much of it”, John Hocevar, marine biologist and oceans campaign director for Greenpeace USA, told ABC News. Adding that the "game changer" will be when people will understand that we cannot keep making things we use once and throw away the materials that basically last forever.
The first step you can take toward living a plastic free life is look around and see which products you can easily substitute to those without plastic. For example, instead of buying a plastic water bottle, get a stainless-steel reusable one. Switch from single use plastic bags to multi-use fabric bags that will last you longer. Substitute your body and hair care products to ones that are plastic free, such as FOAMIE. We offer a range of environmentally-friendly, vegan shampoos and conditioners that will not only make your hair beautiful but will also help make our oceans plastic-free.
